whaaaaat
OK I saw the following after a cursory look at the news and what people are saying about the Boston terrorists. I should step away from the internet.

* Chechnya = Czech Republic
* Chechnya = TURKEY [ok I get Czech Rep, but TURKEY?]
* The terrorists are "Islams" [ISLAMS]
* Immigrants are awful people
* Immigrants can never become "really" American [on CNN too!]
* At the same time, by different people: It doesn't matter that the terrorists are immigrants because they immigrated a long time ago [yes, because their disenfranchised situation will TOTES DISAPPEAR and they will FORGET about it all! Rly!]
* It's TOTALLY OK to call the terrorists "crazies", "maniacs" and "mad" [wow, is it so inconceivable for terrorists NOT to be mentally ill?]
* From Americans: Russians are brutal by nature
* From Russians: People from the Caucasus are brutal by nature
* From Americans: This is the Russians' fault because they couldn't deal with the Chechnya situation!!! [a "Situation". Next up it will be a "Question", you will see.]
* From Russians: This is the Americans' fault because these people spent most of their lives in the US!!!
* The terrorists HAVE to be people of color or my world-view will break
* The terrorists HAVE to be white or my world-view will break
[Both of the above take the information about Chechens as confirmation they were right. Also:]
* Muslims cannot be white
* White people cannot be oppressed [Er, how about white MUSLIMS, I guess the implication is that they turned in their whiteness card...?]
* [And, to add to the race confusion:] Hispanic people in the US are white [...why is this even relevant?!]
* [Plus the perennial favorite:] Bad jokes about the USSR and Eastern Europe [...huh?]

*throws up hands* I give up.

A nicer Shabbat and weekend, everyone.

Not worth following. I promise.

It is really saddening that it is teenage boys involved in something like this again, as they have been in so many situations and places. One wonders what went wrong.

Agreed, but... a 19-year-old counts as an adult in most places. ...well, except the US, I guess.

legally, a 19-year-old is adult here.
But so young . . .

Today, our rabbi sent out an email which included this paragraph: "Wherever you find yourself on this Shabbat, offer up your own misheberach: your own prayer that God's healing presence will be felt in the lives of those who need it most. My prayer for all of us is that we continue to insist on living our lives according to the essential teachings of our tradition; that we are more determined than ever to defy acts of evil and cowardice with acts of goodness and courage; that we continue to work to create a world in which everyone is safe."

I just heard on CNN that "Chechnya is Russia." One of the suspect's friends was talking about him, and said, "I asked where he was from and he said Che...Che..." and couldn't pronounce Chechnya, so the reporter said "Russia," and he said, "Russia."

*sigh* (well, I'm sure the Russian leadership would agree that Chechnya is a part of Russia...)

Just heard it for myself!

Guy on CNN: "The younger brother, [name], he's named after, his first name is similar to that of that of the first president of the Czech Republic, the Islamic Republic."

Have you seen this?

Thanks for the link. I'm not surprised. I'm just darkly amused that he calls out social media and not, say, CNN and the mainstream media which has also made such statements, and without correction (afaik).
